World War II started in Europe on September 1st, 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. Previously, Germany had “peacefully” taken over Czechoslovakia and Austria. Britain and France, allies of Poland, declared war on Germany a few days later. Poland, however, surrendered to Germany when Poland fell under attack from both Nazi and Soviet troops. The U.S.S.R and Nazi Germany had a pact of non-aggression, which Nazi Germany eventually broke by invading the Soviet Union in Operation Barbarossa.
In 1940, Germany attacked and occupied the countries of Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Northern France. Italy, Germany’s ally, invaded Southern France in the summer of 1940. The Battle of Britain ended in defeat for the Nazis, which included the famous Blitz. In the fall of 1940, Germany, Italy, and Japan joined together to form the Axis Powers. The war is mostly German victories until the tides are turned when the Soviets counterattack and the United States joins the struggle against the Axis.
The war ends in German defeat in 1945 in the Battle of Berlin, in early May. Germany is divided up between the Allied Powers, which eventually leads to the Cold War heating up. World War II was the bloodiest war in human history, and will not be forgotten.
